Under the work of the Project, in mid August, 2022, a workshop was held to evaluate the potential of value chain development of the medical plants available in Yen Tri commune, Yen Thuy district, Hoa Binh province (the buffer zone of Cuc Phuong National Park).
Around 40 participants including Cuc Phuong National Park leaders, local authorities of Yen Thuy district and Yen Tri commune, technical experts, local medical producers and businesses attended the workshop. According to the evaluation, amongst 187 species of medical plants in the area, Chinese bittersweet (Celatrus hinsii) (Xa den) is the most popular plant with high potential of creating a successful value chain. Many households in Yen Tri commune are familiar with the medical uses of these plants, however, they have not approached the value chain with enough proper technical guidance from variety selection, cultivating processes, to final product preservation. After evaluating its potential and feasibility, the Project in collaboration with Cuc Phuong National Park will support the local community to enhance the farming area, improve cultivating techniques, acquire consumption safety certificates, and develop future consumption channels.
An MOU was also signed between Ba Vi National Park, The Center of Breeding, Livestock and Aquatic products and Cuc Phuong National Park as a premise for future collaboration in development of herbal value chain in the forest buffer zone, aiming to create sustainable livelihoods for local people and reducing the pressure on the forest.
