Ref 56.21 - extension

1. Background

There are about 150 million tonnes of plastic waste floating across oceans, and about 8 million tons discharged into our oceans every year.
Plastic waste enters the oceans from land and sea sources. An estimated 80% of plastic waste make its way into the ocean from land, and the remaining 20% derives from marine activities such as fishing, recreation, tourism and marine transport (UNESCO, 2020). somewhere between 500,000 and 1 million tonnes of fishing gear gets left in the ocean every year.
Marine plastic waste damages marine life, ecosystems and commercially valuable species.
Vietnam is among the group of the countries that discharge the most plastic waste into the oceans. According to the World Bank statistics, it is estimated that Vietnam generated over 31 million tons of domestic waste and nearly 5 million tons of marine plastic waste in 2018 alone.
Estimated total amount of plastic waste from ghost fishing nationwide is about 68,150 tonnes / year, of which marine plastic waste is about 3,814 tons / year. Plastic waste comes from popular tools and equipment including: 1) fishing activities, plastic is used in fishing gears, such as nets, ropes ... and personal protective equipment such as: life jackets, foam buoys ...; 2) preservation of aquatic products: plastic containers, plastic trays…; and 3) daily activities on fishing boats: plastic water bottles, plastic bags, foam boxes ...
